ACTIVITIES

Kudakalliya caters to all. Arugam Bay is famed for being one of the top 10 surfing destinations in the world. For the ardent surfer, the surf points of Ulla and Elephant Rock are just a walk away, whilst Pottuvil Point, Peanut Farm and Panama Point is a short drive by tuk tuk. Okanda surf point is approximately a 1 ½ hour drive from the bungalow. For those wanting to just laze and sunbathe on the fabulous beaches…well that too is an option!

If you are a wildlife lover, Lahugala National Park which is famed for its large herds of elephants numbering up to 100 plus, is just a half hour drive away. During the dry season from end-June- end September you can watch these magnificent beasts without the mayhem that’s experienced in other touristy spots famed for large herds, such as Minneriya.

Our bungalow keeper will pack a picnic lunch for you to spend the entire day at Yala East National Park where you can observe deer, buffalo, sambur, elephants, numerous variety of birds and of course if luck is on your side the elusive leopard and bear. Have lunch by the Kumbukan River, and during the months when the river is low spend some time lying in the refreshing water with a chilled beer, where the magnificent Kumbuk trees overheard offers you the perfect shade from the blazing noon sun.

You could then drive to the Ramsar site-the Kumana Bird Sanctuary located within the park, and during the nesting season from May- August observes large flocks of nesting storks, pelicans and egrets.

The surrounding areas are a bird watchers paradise. Watch migrant waders in the surrounding water bodies from October-March.

The area is surrounded by fabulous archeological sites, which still remain non-touristy…so you may enjoy Sri Lanka’s ancient history with not a sole but the birds and the monkeys on the treetops above you. Mudhu Maha Vihare off Pottuvil Town is just a 15 minute drive away. What remains now are three masterpieces in granite and some stone pillars on an isolated patch of beach. Magul Maha Vihare yet another fascinating archaeological site is a half hour drive away. The Kudumbigala Rock Hermitage is a hour's drive away. Your climb may be a bit arduous, but once you reach the summit the breathtaking view makes it all worthwhile!
